Mangaone West Catchment Area

Mangaone West Catchment Area

The Mangaone West Catchment covers the area between Halcombe through Mt Biggs into Feilding and Kitchener Park. The Mangaone West stream meets the Makino Stream near Kitchner Park, flowing into the Oroua River which connects into the Manawatū River.

The catchment is a mix of larger farms and lifestyle blocks with the landscape ranging from steeper hill country to rolling farmland. The catchment group was started in the early 2000s to encourage sustainable farming and has since achieved extensive riparian planting along the Mangaone West stream among other things.

Mangaone West Catchment Group Vision:

Mangaone West catchment vision is to see swimmable waterways with native regeneration of plants and animals.

Control soil erosion and continue to plant stream margins and green corridors to link remnant bush areas and increase biodiversity and natural ecosystems.

Detention BundPS120 Scoping

We have engaged the expertise of John Paterson to map and scope the top tributaries of the Mangaone West catchment identifying sites for detention bunds.

Detention bunds have the ability to detain the water temporarily during rain events (max of 3 days to reduce pasture loss). They assist in slowing the water entering the main flow during peak rainfall and reduce sediment and phosphorus entering the waterways.
