Haynes Creek Catchment Area

Haynes Creek Catchment Area

The Haynes Creek catchment is situated north of Feilding including Cheltenham, Kiwitea and Kimbolton villages with highly productive intensive farming land.

The catchment group was formed 3 years ago from initial conversations with local farmers setting up to monitor freshwater quality in the catchment.

This grew to involving a larger public group with meetings and a more formal structure. Water analysis continued in the main streams with additional tile drain samples recorded to give an overall analysis of the catchment freshwater health.

Recently, after a further two years of regular water sampling, more public meetings to learn how to read and interpret the results, the group were invited to be part of the Massey University Catchment Solutions Project to help further their knowledge about what they can do on farm to improve freshwater water quality.  You can learn about edge of field mitigation. click here to visit the bioreactor virtual tour

Haynes Creek Vision:

  • To be profitably farming and have water ways as clear as practically possible.
  • Long term sustainability and vision.  Leave the land in a better state. Increase biodiversity, greater freshwater results, improve animal welfare standards.  Weed and pest eradication.

Catchment Solutions – enhancing rural capability to achieve essential freshwater outcomes

A 3-year collaborative project focused on co-learning, exchange, and outreach for targeted and effective water quality mitigation measures with the development of site specific demonstration sites.

Haynes Creek has been selected to be involved in the Massey University Project. It has provided the opportunity to have on-farm analysis of water run off to give an overall analysis of any potential effects we are having on freshwater health along with providing options as to how to improve those results. A mitigation demonstration site will be constructed soon with field days and workshops for all to attend.
