Makuri River Catchment Area
The Makuri community has formed a subgroup to protect and enhance the local ecosystem and is a collaborative effort to address environmental issues within the catchment.
Makuri River Catchment Group Vision:
The Makuri River runs through the Makuri Gorge Scenic Reserve from the Puketoi Range until it meets the waters of the Tiraumea river. The reserve is known for its native forest and glow worms, highlighting its ecological significance, and is considered a local treasure
Stream testing has been carried out in the catchment since November 21st. The data is critical for understanding the current state of the environment and identifying specific issues. One of which is the invasive impacts of Old Man’s Beard.
The ultimate goal of the Group is to restore the native bush in the Makuri Gorge area to its original beauty.
